Wooo, my one regret is that I didn't have the time or energy to be as insanely enthusiastic as I was last year, but without my vibe, I've received some AWESOME zines in the mail! I need to gather them all together--shuffle through the as-yet-unpacked boxes--and send out copies of my zine and the 24HZ buttons. I'm humbled and in love with the fact that even though I wasn't as persistent with updates this year, all you zinesters who got their zines in did some kickass work--screw the often-absent coordinator's neglect. I've got a three-week break before school starts up, and only a few very pressing deadlines, so I'm going to update the Web site throughout the week. If you have images of/from your zine that you'd like included in your gallery, please send them to me! I'd scan them directly from your zine if you've sent a copy to me, but it seems I've accidentally thrown my printer-scanner's power supply out somewhere along the moving process. Majorly bad news until I can find a replacement, but I can work around it. If all else fails, I can try taking a digital photo of you zine pages, too! Just let me know.
Time (way past) for bedtime. Have a fabulous week, all!
Julie
Hi, Zinesters! I hope everyone's having an awesome weekend. I've done updates to this year's Gallery. You can visit it here. So far, we have twelve participants, and two have completed their zines. I'm hoping to do mine over Memorial Day weekend. Keep your fingers crossed! Cheers, Julie Wed, Jan. 4th, 2006, 11:15 pm BirlZine! 3 =)

Hi, Zinesters, The gallery is just about done! I know Hanna G.'s zine is still packed away, so I don't have scans of her zine yet, but is there anyone else who sent a zine that I haven't scanned? I know I have a bunch packed in the same box, but I'm not sure if I put them up in the gallery yet.
If you haven't sent your zine to me, please leave a comment or send an e-mail to julie-at-rockscissorspaper-dot-org, and I'll send you my new mailing address.
If you'd like changes made to your page, just drop me a line, and I'll take care of it as soon as I can!
Thank you all for your patience!!! I hope you're all having great weekends. Julie
Oy, for those who participated in the 24 Hour Zine Thing Challenge, you know I've been busy at work and with moving, but I'm trying to stay on top with my zine projects.
BirlZine #3 came out at the end of June, and I'm taking submissions for #4, which will come out at the end of September! cut #2 is ready, I just need to print it!
And I've had inquiries about ghost #2. I want to get it out by the end of September. After a vibrant round of telling ghost stories last night over a midnight dinner, I realized that I'm cutting my deadline short, but if you have any true first- or second-hand ghost or "spooky" stories for this issue, please mail them in! I'd like to have them by the end of August, but I might extend to the middle of September if I need to.
There are more details on all these zine projects at rockscissorspaper.com, and you can send stories or questions to julie-at-rockscissorspaper-dot-org.
Hi, Zinesters!
I've got all my boxes in the new house, and now I'm housesitting for the next six days, so I won't even be home. Oy!
I'm exhausted, but excited to see how many people completed this year's challenge! I'm frustrated that my time was otherwise diverted during the final month, but I'm amazed at what the challenge produced, and I'm looking forward to repeating the challenge next year. Next time, though, I'll be recruiting help! It seemed like this year, just delegating tasks to the awesome people who offered took more time than I had to spare.
I get back home on Thursday, and then I'll wrap things up and start listing trade information on the gallery pages. If you don't have info on the LJ community or e-mailed to me to be made public, please do so! I'll be getting in touch with those of you who I need information from!
That said, I have to run, but I hope everyone has a great weekend! Thanks for participating!!!
Julie
Somber search for self-satisfaction (body dysmorphic disorder) 20 pages, 1/4-sized, meandering computer layouts, $1 or $1.20 through PayPal (inc. s&h) See actual book covers here and back covers here. Excerpt: I always had this fear that I'd break them. That happened to a girl once in PE while we were playing soccer. I'd never known you could break those things. Really, I'd never paid much mind to their existence at all. Now there they were, broken through the skin, screaming white at the sky, fearing their exposed existence. Despite that, I was suddenly aware of their very elegance. or send $1.00 in cash or stamps along with your mailing address to Julie Elefante; 1033 W. 12th St.; Tempe, AZ 85281-5363.</font>

BirlZine! is a compilation zine of personal writing, essays, poetry, photography, art, news, and resources for and by boyish girls (birls) who enjoy riding the gender wave and don’t let their gender dictate how to act. A birl can be a hetero tomboy, an FTM, or anyone in between. This is a safe space for birls to share our work and find relevant news and resources. The second issue was awesome! I think they can only get better. So: Does anyone want to contribute material for the third and fourth issues? The third and fourth issues will be interview issues focusing on ten different birls who volunteered to answer interview questions that give a general idea of how many different kinds of birls there are, but there will still be some room in both issues for the regular stuff. If you have anything, I'm taking submissions until May 31. I'm looking for essays, personal writing, art, photography, news, stories (true and fiction), maybe some informative columns (like stuff on binding, etc.), resource info. that I can list in the back, etc. Anything I get should be of birly interest or by birls--that's the one solid rule!!! I'm going to try to do an 8-1/2 x 11 format (legal sheet folded in half) so that there's more room for art, and I'm afraid it'll have to be black and white stuff because I don't have the dough or the resources to print color. There's more info at www.birlzine.com, and I post info as it hits me at www.livejournal.com/~birlzine. If you're interested or have comments or questions, please comment here and/or send a line to me backchannel at julie-at-birlzine-dot-com.
x-posted everywhere cut #1 Text-heavy first issue about what happened during the first 90 days of recovery from self-injurious behavior. Excerpt: I'm remembering all the sweet and all the bitter things that were said tonight with equal viciousness--all those things she said that were right and that were wrong. The wrong things are already cocooning the right things up in sticky silk and sucking the juice out. Things like, "If I'd met you before Michelle, she wouldn't've had a snowballs chance in hell." As it is, I'm melting much more slowly than I thought I ever would, but it wouldn't be hell if the release were quick, would it? 1/4-page format 24 pages (1 oz.), $1.20 (inc. s&h) or send $1.20 in cash or stamps along with your mailing address to Julie Elefante; 1033 W. 12th St.; Tempe, AZ 85281-5363. Cross-posted everywhere! Can you come up with a zine concept, build the zine, and have a finished product at the end of 24 hours? Probably. But this challenge is designed to see just how great a zine you can make in that kind of time frame. Wanna play? Click on the clock to find out how to participate! My test run: A few weeks ago, I did a 16-page, quarter-size zine, start to finish, in 4.5 hours: I was able to make 20 copies. Want one? First 20 people to sign up for the challenge will get a copy for free!</center> Sat, Apr. 2nd, 2005, 12:58 am a week off
I'm taking a full week off from zining, starting tomorrow. I'll be back promptly next Sunday, April 10, though! =)
x-posted: zinesters, zine_scene, stolensharpie Hello Zinesters Everywhere, I've gotten some great feedback on starting up a 24-hour zine thing where you create a zine, top to bottom, from idea to last stitch or staple, in a continuous 24-hour period. BUT: Some have pointed out that doing only a 24-page zine in 24 hours might be too easy. What do you think? What can you do in 24 hours? Feedback welcome! If I decide to organize a 24-hour event, I don't think I'll pick a day, but rather a deadline so that you can pick your own day before the deadline (probably July 31). Again, I'd love some feedback. Have a great week, Julie rockscissorspaper.org
This is a print/fold/read promo sampler for BirlZine!. Let me know what you think of it! If you know of people who might be interested in submitting, please send them our way. Thanks! Julie

She'd walk in to check on him, and he'd look at her, grin happily, and say, "Little girl! Little girl!" and point to where nothing was sitting next to him.
[But sometimes,] Marilyn would see the little long-haired girl running around out of the corner of her eye, dressed in an old-style dress. Even though she told me she was friendly, she told me she sometimes get very scared in her own home, running down the hall into her bedroom when she was alone. Before the first time I ever visited, I told her how excited I was at the prospect of seeing her. Marilyn replied, "If you want to see her, she'll let you."

Woohoo! BirlZine #2's layout is finished! Now I just have to print the master copy, make corrections on that, then I can start photocopying ... www.birlzine.com is getting a new layout from Nik. To say the least, I'm incredibly stoked. Max has submitted an article for issue #3. More excitement--my first biomale contributor. Hooray! Wed, Mar. 2nd, 2005, 12:46 pm BirlZine! #2 Update, x-posted to zinesters and zine_scene
Well, issue #2 is on track and should be mailed out by March 31! I've already got more than fifty people on this issue's mailing list, and the awesomest news ever--both issues 1 (if I can edit the master copy in time) and 2 will be handed out at the TRANS-forming Feminism Conference in New York next month in April. Last year's conference drew in almost 300 people! Crazy cool, huh? Let me know now if you'd like a copy so I know how many to run off. E-mail your mailing addy to julie@birlzine.com. The zine is free, but postage donations are greatly appreciated! So yeah, I'm so incredibly proud of our zine and this issue's rockstar contributors: Aiden, Alyssa Casillas, Annie Aarons, Brittany Dunning, Christine D. Chilingerian, H. Greaves, Jaime, Jen Brett, Jessica LaFrank, Julie S., Kayden Healy, Kristie Badrigian, kristin superhero, Maya Rrrr, Nicole Luna, Nik Scarlett, Rachel DiSaia, and Steffi ( Wanna sneak peek at the cover? )For more info, you can stop in at www.birlzine.com. If you've sent in a request to receive the zine, you'll find your tracking info there (I listed your name and state, and that should be enough to ID yourselves). More importantly, there's info there for submitting to the third issue, which I plan on putting out at the end of June. Send stuff in now! For reals! Also, I'm looking for contributors for future, themed issues, including drag king shows, genderqueers, and FTMs. Please get in touch with me if you have ideas or material you'd like to contribute to the zine. Thanks!
BirlZine! #3--Call for Submissions! Hi! I just wanted to get the word out about my zine. The second issue will hit the copy machine in a few weeks. Please contact me at tanrazz@yahoo.com if you'd like a copy, especially if you're a reviewer. I'd like some constructive criticism. Officially, though this post is a call for submissions for the third issue.
Birls encompass bio-females who break the gender binary, from hetero tomboys to FTMs and everyone in between. I'm looking for submissions that would be of birl-interest--b/w art, b/w photos, and poetry written by birls or about birls, resources, news, rants, reviews, recommendations, etc. Eventually, I'll do themed issues for drag kings, FTMs, birls with body mods, activism, etc. Please e-mail me at tanrazz@yahoo.com if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. Thanks!
